Individual adaptive performance in computer-mediated work: a migration perspective

Abstract: PurposeIn dynamic environments, employees should respond to changing demands carrying out actions to achieve proper knowledge of the information systems (IS) that they use (individual adaptation). However, few studies have investigated the determinants of this behaviour. This study proposes and empirically evaluates a cognitive-attitudinal model grounded in migration theory, which considers push, pull and mooring factors.Design/methodology/approachData collected from ERP users were analysed using partial least… Show more

“…Such disturbances can be the misfits between work systems (i.e., processes and tasks within the workplace) and IT, and the reasons for modifications at the person self would be to improve one's own workflow (Zhou, Tong, Hock, & Tan, 2016). Users may do so by, for example, picking up new skills, which help them learn and thus improve how they execute tasks (Barki, Titah, & Boffo, 2007), which in turn helps them manage the disturbance (Beaudry & Pinsonneault, 2005) and identify some benefits in IT use (Bravo & Ostos, 2020).…”

“…Roger (2016) notes that digital transformation is not only focused on technology but also on strategy formulation. A major barrier to new technology adoption is resistance by organizational stakeholders, particularly non-IT managers and employees (Atkin et al, 2017;Bravo and Ostos, 2021). Wireless IT competency is able to promote access to external knowledge in terms of availability and reach, such as in mobile communications, which is likely to encourage knowledge exchange and technology diffusion (e.g.…”

“…We propose that such persistence of ESM usage can be explained by ESM usage inertia (Jung et al, 2019). Bravo and Ostos (2021) show that ESM usage inertia is an effective source that significantly affects social media user behavior. Accordingly, we identify ESM usage inertia as an effective status quo experience of employees that keeps them persistent in the excessive use of ESM and decreases their employee performance.…”
