Introduction: Research addressing the costs of Medication errors (MEs) is still scarce despite issues related to patient safety having significant economic and health impacts, making it imperative to analyze the costs and adverse events related to MEs for a better patient, professional, and institutional safety. Aim: To identify the number of medication errors and verify whether this number was associated with increased hospitalization costs for patients in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Method: This retrospective cross-sectional cohort study evaluated secondary data from patients’ electronic medical records to compile variables, create a model, and survey hospitalization costs. The statistical analysis included calculating medication error rates, descriptive analysis, and simple and multivariate regression. Results: The omission error rate showed the highest number of errors per drug dose (59.8%) and total errors observed in the sample (55.31%), followed by the time error rate (26.97%; 24.95%). The omission error had the highest average when analyzing the entire hospitalization (170.40) and day of hospitalization (13.79). Hospitalization costs were significantly and positively correlated with scheduling errors, with an increase of BRL 121.92 (about USD $25.00) (95% CI 43.09; 200.74), and to prescription errors, with an increase of BRL 63.51 (about USD $3.00) (95% CI 29.93; 97.09). Conclusion: We observed an association between two types of medication errors and increased hospitalization costs in an adult ICU (scheduling and prescription errors).

Objetivo Diseñar y validar indicadores de cuidado de enfermería a partir de la orientación de un modelo de práctica profesional en un hospital universitario de Colombia, 2018 – 2021. Material y Método: Esta es una “Investigación metodológica en enfermería” desarrollada por fases: 1) revisión de los procesos de calidad institucional. 2) revisión de literatura sobre indicadores hospitalarios de enfermería. 3) propuesta de indicadores con orientación del modelo institucional de práctica profesional de enfermería 4) validación de los indicadores mediante criterio de expertos y 5) evaluación de la efectividad preliminar en campo durante 8 meses. Resultados: Los 21 indicadores de cuidado de enfermería propuestos presentaron alta comprensibilidad y validez facial, una razón de validez de contenido (RVC) entre .74 y .96, y un índice de validez de contenido (IVC) de 0.83. Conclusión: Los indicadores de cuidado de enfermería diseñados bajo la orientación de un modelo de práctica profesional y validados mediante el criterio de expertos, mostraron una efectividad preliminar positiva para medir y mejorar los procesos y resultado del cuidado de enfermería de acuerdo con las personas implicadas en la recepción y suministro de dicho cuidado. Estos indicadores pueden ser empleados en hospitales con plataformas estratégicas similares.

Objective: To compare the nursing workload in an oncology intensive care unit according to the condition of COVID-19 infection. Method: A retrospective cohort study. The Nursing Activities Score was used to measure the workload and document analysis for data extraction. The medical records were divided into a group of patients with COVID-19 and another group of patients without the infection. Results: The values of the Nursing Activities Score were not different depending on the sociodemographic variables, but the average of this score was statistically different depending on whether the patient had the diagnosis of COVID-19 or not, being higher in those who had the disease. Conclusion: It was proved that the nursing workload is high in the context of the oncology intensive care unit. However, COVID-19 increased this score even more, with the Nursing Activities Score being an important tool to size the team in this context.
