Indicators for sexual HIV transmission risk among people in Thailand attending HIV care: the importance of positive prevention

Abstract: Indicators for HIV transmission risk were common among people attending HIV care in Bangkok. Efforts need to be strengthened to reduce unsafe casual and commercial sex and to increase HIV disclosure from men to their partners. A strategy for STI screening and treatment for people with HIV in Thailand should be developed.

“…Among patients enrolled in the HIV CMP, 44% had engaged in unprotected vaginal or anal sex with an HIV-negative or unknown status partner. This finding is consistent with prior studies [2][3][4]7] showing that a substantial proportion of HIV-infected patients engaged in unsafe sexual practices that present a risk of HIV transmission to an uninfected person. Consistent with previous researches [2][3][4], HIVinfected MSM were more likely to have unprotected intercourses than heterosexuals or IDUs.…”

Consistent with previous researches [2][3][4], HIVinfected MSM were more likely to have unprotected intercourses than heterosexuals or IDUs. In Western Europe [21] and San Francisco [22,23], unprotected anal intercourse among HIV-positive MSM, even in a sero-concordant-positive context, has accounted significantly for the outbreaks of LGV (Lymphogranuloma venereum) and established cases of sexually transmitted hepatitis C, rectal gonorrhoea, and the syphilis outbreaks.…”
