The high HIV prevalence and incidence in this cohort of Bangkok MSM documents an explosive epidemic. Additional preventive interventions for MSM are urgently needed.
The multiple daily use of COL-1492 by female sex workers did not show an increase of local toxicity over that of a placebo. Colposcopy was discontinued in the autumn of 1997 in accordance with a Data Safety Monitoring Board decision. In the currently ongoing effectiveness trial the assessment of the product's toxicity continues to be monitored by simple visual examination.
These data suggest high sexual risk among beer girls in Cambodia. Targeted and frequent HIV and STI interventions are urgently needed in this population.
Indicators for HIV transmission risk were common among people attending HIV care in Bangkok. Efforts need to be strengthened to reduce unsafe casual and commercial sex and to increase HIV disclosure from men to their partners. A strategy for STI screening and treatment for people with HIV in Thailand should be developed.
