Local food systems: potential for new market connections for family farming

In recent years, local food systems have come to be seen as a new possibility in creating markets for family farming. These systems are based on local production and consumption structures, with a primary focus on sustainability, locality and proximity. It is essential to understand the dynamics of these systems and their impact in the context of family farmers. Thus, this article seeks to identify in the literature the main theories and concepts used in the analysis of “local food systems”, verifying the state of the art of its theoretical elements related to the concept of “family farming” in Brazilian and international academia. The methodological procedure employed was a systematic literature review following the Methodi Ordinatio protocol, covering 30 articles indexed in the search portal Periódicos - Capes and in the database ProQuest. The main approaches included in this theme are presented in a summarized form, as well as the research gaps in the area are identified. The results show that these concepts involve themes such as local rural development, politicization of consumption, sustainability, market niches, agroecology, territorial valorization, and institutional programs.

Geographic Indications (GI) represent a collective trademark created to protect producers and promote the trade of products that have become notorious due to its region of production. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to provide an overview on the concepts of GI and provide the main relevant facts and figures of GI worldwide and in Brazil.As of July 2019, more than 130 thousand of GIs were registered at the World Intellectual Property Organization, mainly in Europe, Asia and the Americas. In Brazil, as an emerging economy, GI is becoming an increasingly important, both in terms of protecting Brazilian typical products as well as the GI from other countries trading with Brazil. Consumption trends towards originality, typical products, expressing certain quality attributes may further develop businesses in different parts of the world. Consumers with higher income may prefer certain quality attributes for the products and services they consume. In this context, GI represent a strong and sustainable strategy to provide those goods and services to those demanding consumers.

ResumoAs Indicações Geográficas (IGs) podem ser entendidas, do ponto de vista econômico, como uma estratégia para agregar valor a produtos ou serviços que têm características próprias relacionadas ao território ao qual estão inseridas, e, assim, fortalecer o desenvolvimento territorial. O instituto se divide em indicação de procedência (IP) e denominação de origem (DO). O primeiro indica que produtos ou serviços procedem de determinado lugar, cujos elementos principais para sua caracterização são as ações do homem e o saber fazer. O segundo destaca que, além dos elementos de produção humana, requer que o produto se caracterize pelos elementos da natureza, tais como relevo, clima e solo. As IGs visam a proteger os produtos, os produtores e, principalmente, garantir a qualidade e a informação aos consumidores. A análise do presente artigo é caracterizada como qualitativa e descritiva e quanto aos meios de investigação classifica-se como bibliográfica. A pesquisa bibliográfica foi realizada como meio de investigação em fontes secundárias. Procurou-se verificar como o instituto da IG pode promover o desenvolvimento territorial, identificando pontos fortes e vocações econômicas que podem tornar a região mais competitiva a partir da análise da experiência da IP dos Vales da Uva Goethe, na região de Urussanga -SC. O estudo demonstrou que as IGs podem ser verdadeiras catalisadoras do desenvolvimento territorial. Na experiência da Indicação de Procedência dos Vales da Uva Goethe, observou-se importantes vantagens, sobretudo econômicas, após o reconhecimento, como o aumento nas vendas e o acesso a novos mercados. Além disso, identificou-se o desenvolvimento de atividades complementares, como o enoturismo e a preservação da identidade local.Palavras-chave: Indicação geográfica. Desenvolvimento territorial.
