Indiana's Forests 2008

Abstract: The second full annual inventory of Indiana's forests reports more than 4.75 million acres of forest land with an average volume of more than 2,000 cubic feet per acre. Forest land is dominated by the white oak/red oak/hickory forest type, which occupies nearly a third of the total forest land area. Seventy-six percent of forest land consists of sawtimber, 16 percent contains poletimber, and 8 percent contains sapling/seedlings. The volume of growing stock on timberland has been rising since the 1980s and curr… Show more

“…It is similar to other Midwestern areas experiencing residential expansion, declining agricultural land use, and peri-urban reforestation (Deller et al, 2001). Over the past century, forest area in the state of Indiana has grown from 6 to 20 percent of the state's area, with most of the regrowth occurring on small parcels owned by approximately 218,000 family forest owners (Woodall et al, 2011). Individuals own 83 percent (or 1.6 million hectares) of Indiana's forest lands (Woodall et al, 2011).…”

“…Tulip poplar, red maple and sugar maple -all AM speciesare becoming increasingly dominant in hardwood forests due the poor regeneration and selective harvesting of ECM oak species (Woodall et al, 2011;Lister et al, 2012). To the extent that the increased abundance of AM trees promotes a more inorganic nutrient economy, the biogeochemical attributes of these forests will also change (e.g.…”

“…For example, the cycle of plots measured from 2009 through 2013 are collectively labeled the "2013 inventory" and were used to produce this 2013 report. Previous inventories of Indiana's forest resources were completed in 1950 (Winters 1953), 1967 (Spencer 1969), 1986(Smith and Golitz 1988, Spencer et al 1990(Schmidt et al 2000(Woodall et al 2005, and 2008 (Woodall et al 2011).…”
