Independent and Combined Associations of Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Fatness With Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Brazilian Youth

Abstract: CRF and BMI are independently associated to TC and BP in male and female youth, and individuals unfit/overweight have greater likelihood of presenting these risk factors.

“…Contrary to what we hypothesized, our results showed that the association between CRF (assessed by 20‐m shuttle run test), and CVDRF‐I became non‐significant when we adjusted for BMI in both sex groups. By contrast, an independent effect of CRF and adiposity on CVD risk factors has been previously reported . Nevertheless, other part of the evidence suggest that the association between CRF and CVD risk factors does not remain significant when adiposity is taken into account …”

“…Given that CRF affects weight status, they may lay on the same causal pathway, making it difficult to determine the extent to which each variable affects CVD risk. In this sense, while some evidence suggest an independent association of CRF and weight status with CVD risk factors, other studies have found an attenuation in the association between CRF and CVD risk factors when weight status was included in the analyses . In addition, a recent study by Nyström et al concluded that the metabolic profile is negatively affected to a greater extent by obesity rather than by low CRF levels, in a sample of children aged 8 to 11 years.…”

“…Firstly, in combining low physical fitness with indicators of high adiposity, there is an increase in cardiovascular risk in comparison with the separate outcomes. 26,27 Secondly, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and low adiposity are independently associated with cardiometabolic risk [28][29][30] and thus, it is desirable that young people should fulfill all of these health criteria. Thus, the results showed that engagement in physical education classes was associated with higher probability of achievement of combined health criteria among participants who were not sports practitioners.…”

“…8,30 Considerando que a melhoria da ApC é mediada pelo prática de AF, 29 conclui-se que o aprimoramento deste componente da aptidão física deve ser estimulado entre os adolescentes. Para isto, similar ao discutido anteriormente, espaços para a prática e programas de AF devem ser disponibilizados para esta população.…”
