PURPOSE. Conduct a detailed analysis of existing wind turbines. Analyze the role, place and features of the functioning of wind power plants. Provide various options for generators and schemes for converting wind energy into electricity. Provide recommendations for improving the reliability of wind turbines in smart grids.METHODS. The article was prepared using analytical methods, statistical, theoretical, factorial and technical methods.RESULTS. A fixed speed asynchronous generator used in a wind power conversion system (WECS) without a power converter interface draws a significant portion of the reactive power from the grid. This configuration features simple, reliable operation. Wind turbine asynchronous generator with dual power supply. can improve overall power conversion efficiency by performing maximum power point tracking (MPPT), and an increase in speed of about 30% can improve dynamic performance and increase resilience to system disturbances that are not available for turbine types 1 and 2. The use of full-scale 100% power converters will significantly increase the productivity of SPEV wind energy conversion systems, but will slightly increase the cost of the power converter, up to 7% - 12% of the total equipment cost. By using a large number of pole pairs for all types of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMG), the turbine gearbox can be removed. This type of wind energy conversion system is more resilient to grid disruptions compared to type 1, 2 and 3 wind systems. The review shows that types 3 and 4 technologies are used to most efficiently sell and recycle wind turbines in electricity markets.CONCLUSION. The article analyzes the features of the functioning of wind power plants operating on the grid. Various options for generators and schemes for converting wind energy into electricity are presented. A detailed analysis of existing wind turbines is provided. Recommendations are given for improving the reliability and efficiency of wind power plants in smart grids.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess how the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) renewable energy policy (EREP) affects energy intensity using the difference-in-difference (DID) and the propensity score matching methods (PSM). Based on the current debates on renewable energy policies (REP) and due to the fact that energy efficiency has been a challenge for ECOWAS member states. The authors set up a framework to assess the EREP effect on energy intensity. Design/methodology/approach Using the DID and PSM approaches the paper assesses the effect of EREP on energy intensity. The following three different paths are considered: Path 1 tests the EREP effect on electricity access. Path 2 tests the use of renewable energy sources as a factor to enhance the energy intensity. Path 3 tests whether or not use of renewable energy deployment has the potential to raise the total percentage of primary energy supply. The principle is to investigate if and to what extend the EREP increases the energy intensity. Findings The results indicate that EREP has a significantly positive effect on increasing the percentage of energy intensity in ECOWAS member states that has implemented the policy, resulting for a large percentage of the population to electricity access in treated groups. Empirical estimation results largely corroborate the three paths’ hypotheses. The result indicated that the EREP has increased the percentage of electricity access throughout the region. Originality/value The paper explores a more appropriate framework to examine the effect of EREP and enriches the literature on the impact of REP by combining a policy evaluation approach (PSM-DID) method. This paper is the first to the knowledge to estimate the EREP effect by using a non-parametric approach. The majority of previous studies have focused on using case studies, exploratory analysis approaches and econometric methods.

The performance parameter of CO 2 electroreduction includes the factor of energy efficiency. The overall energy efficiency for the process includes both the cathode and anode reactions. In aqueous medium, for carrying CO 2 electroreduction at cathode, the anodic reaction is majorly oxygen evolution reaction (OER, E 0 = +1.23V). Thus, additional useful byproduct could be obtained from the CO 2 electroreduction process by coupling both processes such that high purity oxygen could also be collected. The electrolytic cell arrangement for obtaining high purity oxygen along with carrying CO 2 electroreduction may involve two separate compartments or even two individual electrolytic cells connected by a salt bridge. The issue with continuous ionic replenishing of salt bridge could be taken care by supplying salt electrolyte to the salt bridge or carrying the process with multiple salt bridges.OER is not only energy consuming but its sluggish kinetics lowers the overall efficiency of the process. It is for improving overall efficiency of the process that better catalysts for OER could be employed. Furthermore, the process of oxygen evolution as the counter-reaction of CO 2 electroreduction is quite favorable as there is no requirement of any additional or modification in the electrolyte employed for electroreduction of CO 2 . This advantage of utilizing the same aqueous electrolyte for anodic compartment is focused for achieving enhanced OER and obtaining oxygen as a by-product of CO 2 electroreduction process.
