Increased serum Wisteria floribunda agglutinin positive Mac-2 binding protein (Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer) in chronic heart failure: a pilot study

Abstract: Elevation of serum WFA-M2BP showed a high prevalence in chronic HF patients with abnormal liver function with relation to HF history, decreased hepatic protein synthesis, and renal dysfunction. Our results suggest that serum WFA-M2BP may be a novel biomarker of chronic HF.

“…45 Furthermore, serum levels of M2BPGi are higher in patients with chronic heart failure. 46 In this study, we showed that the cut-off points of diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, and macroangiopathy were 0.95, 0.91, and 0.78, respectively. These cut-off points were lower than that of chronic hepatitis (M2BPGi≥1.00).…”

“…Few reports have referred to the relationship between M2BPGi and renal function. Okada et al reported elevated M2BPGi was associated with a decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate in chronic heart failure patients with abnormal liver function. Previous reports demonstrated that tumor necrosis factor‐α and interferon‐γ can increase M2BPGi expression in fibroblasts .…”

“…[ 44 ] Alternatively, M2BPGi levels could reflect the fibrotic progression of other organs, such as the heart, lungs, and pancreas. [ 45 , 46 , 47 ] Elevated M2BPGi levels have been reported in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. [ 33 ] M2BPGi is secreted from hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and induces Mac‐2 protein expression in Kupffer cells.…”
