“…Significant induction of SOD was shown in marine mussels Mytilusgalloprovincialis in the contaminated sites in the lagoon of Venice . Other studies show the increase of Cu, Zn-SOD under excessive oxidative stress and no induction of Mn-SOD in invertebrate animals (Datkhile et al, 2009). However, in the present study, the responses of SOD were highly seasonally dependent.…”

“…The total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity was measured following the method of Zhang et al (2008) [48] with slight modifications and using head kidney and spleen homogenates instead of hepatic homogenates. To distinguish SOD isoforms, we used the sensitivity of CuZnSOD to cyanide; in contrast, MnSOD is unaffected according to the method described in a previous study [49]. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were assayed as previously described [48].…”

“…The protein content was determined according to a previous study [52] and was used to calculate the antioxidant enzyme activities and the GSH content of the fish. Generally, with the exception of SOD, in which 1 unit of activity was considered to be half of the inhibition of absorbance compared to a tube lacking the enzyme according to the method described by Datkhile et al [53], in the enzyme assays 1 unit of activity was considered to be the amount of enzyme required to transform 1 mmol of substrate min À1 .…”

“…Different expressions of SOD and CAT isoforms have been shown in control and stressed larvae of Hyphantria cunea (Kim et al 2010) and Protaetia brevitarsis (Kim et al 2008). Also, the expression of several SOD isozymes and significantly increased intensity of two bands, as well as higher activity detected on the CAT zymogram, have been recorded in larvae of Chironomus ramosus exposed to a stressful condition (Datkhile et al 2009). Dynamic modulation in the expression of a particular isoform of any of these antioxidative enzymes can be more beneficial for it maintains redox homeostasis than changes in its total activity, in the state of stress exerted by environmental agents.…”
