Increased Incidence of Glaucoma in Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Population-Based Cohort Study

Abstract: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the incidence of glaucoma in patients diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) via the application of the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Patients with a diagnosis of SNHL were enrolled in the study group after an exclusion procedure and a propensity score matched group without SNHL was served as the control group with a 1:2 ratio. The main outcome was regarded as the emergence of glaucom… Show more

“…SAS version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA) was used for the analyses mentioned in the current study, and the statistical methods were similar to those used in previous studies [19]. After age-and gender-matching with 1:4 proportions of both the study group and control group, a Poisson regression was performed to calculate the incidence rate of CVD and 95% confidence intervals (CI).…”

“…SAS version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA) was used for all the analyses applied in the current study and the statistical methods were similar to a previous study [ 16 ]. After age- and gender-matching and PSM with 1:1 proportions of both the study group and control group, the absolutely standardized difference (ASD) was calculated to ensure the distribution of each potential risk factor is homogenous between the study and control groups (an ASD value less than 0.1 is regarded as a similar distribution).…”

“… 2 SNHL is more common in people over the age of 65, with a prevalence of over 60%. 3 , 4 It may be associated with various etiological factors, including autoimmune ear disease, vascular diseases, noise, infection, and drug toxicity. 5 SNHL may also manifest features of vestibular schwannoma, which can only be ruled out by magnetic resonance imaging.…”

“… 17 There is also some evidence of an association between SNHL and glaucoma. 3 As both diseases have related neurological degeneration characteristics, it is assumed that these conditions are more likely to coexist in a specific group of people. Therefore, the current study was designed primarily to assess hearing function in chronic glaucoma patients and compare the results with those of age- and gender-matched healthy individuals.…”
