Increased Frequency of HLA‐Cw3 and HLA‐Dw4 in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: Thirty-nine patients with rheumatoid arthritis were HLA typed for the full range of A and B locus specificities and for Cw3 and Dw4. HLA-Dw4 was significantly more frequent in patients (36%) than in controls (13%). The frequency of Cw3 was also increased, pr.obably because this allele is in linkage disequilibrium with Dw4.

“…Recent immunogenetic studies indicate that a common link between the 2 diseases may be the HLADRw4 locus, since the frequency of this allele has been reported to be increased in psoriatic atthritis (34) as well as in rheumatoid arthritis (35,36). Human immune response (Ir) genes appear to be localized near the D locus (37,38).…”
