The genus Cephalaria, belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family, is a rich source of interesting secondary metabolites, including mainly saponins which display a variety of biological activities, such as immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and hemolytic effects. Besides these compounds, flavonoids and phenolic acids were identified in Cephalaria species. Cephalaria is employed in traditional medicine e.g., to cure cardiac and lung diseases, rheumatism, and regulate menstruation. In this review we focus on the phenolic compound composition and antioxidative activity of Cephalaria species. The antioxidant effect can be explained by flavonoids present in all parts of these plants. However, future efforts should concentrate more on in vitro and in vivo studies and also on clinical trials in order to confirm the possibility of using these plants as natural antioxidants for the pharmacology, food or cosmetic industries.

Saponins make up an important group of natural glycosidic compounds which are distinguished by triterpene or steroidal aglycone. Although widely distributed in terrestrial flora, especially higher plants, they can also be found in some marine organisms. Cytotoxic activity is one of the most frequently reported from a wide array of pharmacological activities known for these metabolites. The current review is an update of our previous paper—Saponins as cytotoxic agents (Podolak et al. Phytochem Rev 9:425–474, 2010), and covers studies that were since published (2010–2021). This part refers to triterpene saponins and complements the first, which was devoted solely to steroidal saponins (Sobolewska et al. Phytochem Rev 19:139–189, 2020). Cytotoxic activities in vitro and in vivo are presented with a main focus on structure-activity relationships and molecular mechanisms of action.

Three different extracts (aqueous, ethanolic and ethyl acetate) of Carthamus tenuis and Cephalaria jopprnsis were prepared and tested for total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity and antifungal activity. Results for C. tenuis are meaningfully different of known findings. As for C. joppensis, the medicinal and biological properties of this plant were never published before. For each plant, TPC was highest in aqueous extracts and these had highest antioxidant capacity. Ethanolic extracts of both plants had strongest activity against Rhizopus stolonifer (black mold).
