Increase in myelin basic protein in CSF after brain surgery

Abstract: Myelin basic protein in spinal fluid was measured with a radioimmunoassay method after surgery of brain tumors and posttraumatic brains in thirteen cases. Three cases were studied daily for up to three weeks. Immediately after the operation the values were high but then successively returned to normal. Repeated measurement of the myelin basic protein in spinal fluid seem to be useful for assessing the healing rate of brain tissue after surgery for brain tumors and after other brain damage.

“…Glioblastoma multiforme has also reported at the site of metal splinter injury [15] and gunshot injuries complicated with infectious processes may be responsible for the development of posttraumatic GBM after many years [24]. Glioblastoma multiforme may also develop after neurosurgical operations due to the collection of myelin basic protein in the brain [25].…”

“…20 The assay of myelin-basic protein was performed with a radioimmunological method as described by Karlsson and Alling 23 using cold ethanol in the precipitation step. Increased levels of plasma proteins, including IgG in CSF, has not been found to correlate with increasing levels of myelin-basic protein.…”

“…19 after brain surgery, 20 and also in acute-CVD patients. 21 The purpose of the present study was to measure the CSF concentrations of MBP, tau-fraction, albumin, IgG and transferrin in a well-defined clinical sample of acute-CVD patients, to demonstrate the significance of the substances as markers of acute CVD, and to correlate these markers to the type and size of brain lesion and to the patient's clinical outcome.…”

“…26 Glioblastoma multiformes may also develop after neurosurgical operations due to the collection of myelin basic protein in the brain. 1 Manuelidis 17 has stated that bleeding, edema and scars should be distinguished from traumatic injury. A contrast CT/MR done soon after resolution of the traumatic contusion should not reveal a mass lesion.…”
