Chemical and noise hazards are known to have a synergistic effect, where a variety of different chemical substances may worsen hearing damage in humans. These chemical substances are identified as ototoxicants that are toxic to the auditory system. This study evaluated the issue and created a framework in which these ototoxicants can be recognized early in the workplace. The approach involved hazard identification of chemicals hazardous to health, observation of tasks related to chemicals, identification of ototoxicants and noise exposure, evaluation of risks, and determination of the adequacy of control measures in accordance with the DOSH Malaysia Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) Third Edition Manual 2017 and the Industry Code of Practice for Management of Occupational Noise Exposure and Hearing Conservation 2019. The target subjects of this study involved 148 palm oil mill workers at two different locations who are exposed to both chemicals and noise throughout their daily tasks. Four work units (i.e., boiler operators and welders at palm oil mill A and laboratory analysts and welders at palm oil mill B) were concluded to have a significant risk of exposure to ototoxicants due to the high noise exposure, inadequacy of engineering control, and unsuitable use of PPE.

Rice husk ash (RHA), palm oil mill effluent (POME) sludge, and decanter cake can be utilized as compost to reduce environmental pollution. This research attempted to investigate the effect of RHA addition to palm oil-based compost in boosting the nitrogen (N) uptake and the growth of Brassica oleracea var. <i>alboglabra</i> L. (Chinese kale plant). Two categories of compost treatment were prepared in this study: Treatment 1 (control) and Treatment 2 [consisting of 10% (wt/wt) of RHA]. Both treatments were composted for 60 days until it was matured. The temperature and pH of the composts were recorded daily throughout the study. The treatments were analyzed for moisture, water-holding capacity, and nutrient content. The Chinese kale plant was grown in growing media and applied with Treatment 1 and Treatment 2 composts. The progress of plant growth was tracked every week. Based on the analysis, Treatment 2 exhibited a higher temperature and pH profile than Treatment 1. Meanwhile, the contents of N, P, and K were higher in Treatment 1 compost. However, Treatment 2 compost had higher silicon (Si) content, moisture content, and water-holding capacity. Based on the field test study carried out on the Chinese kale plant, the N uptake, and the growth of the plant, were found to be significantly higher when applied with Treatment 2 compost compared to Treatment 1 by 19% to 31% and 13% to 53%, respectively. It was proven that the addition of 10% RHA managed to provide an adequate amount of Si, moisture content, and water-holding capacity in Treatment 2 compost that can enhance the N uptake and improve the growth of the Chinese kale plant in this study.

Climate change, food security, and energy crisis are becoming more intense in our world. Oil palm can be utilized in both the food and biofuel industries. To respond to the crisis, it is necessary to develop palm oil products besides vegetable oil and biodiesel. This article focuses on the development of strategies to research oil palm throughout the supply chain in Thailand. The SWOT factors (the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) are recognized via interviews with stakeholders. These stakeholders are feedstock producers, crude palm oil (CPO) producers, government agencies, biodiesel producers, palm oil refinery producers, and researchers. The results obtained from the data collection were analyzed and led to the formulation of strategies for future research on oil palm by the TOWS matrix. According to this analysis, future palm oil research framework strategies should consist of four categories: (1) oil palm management policy, developing regulation and economic instruments of various forms to systematically manage the oil palm industry, and applying big data and smart innovation to analyze market behavior; (2) oil palm breeding and production technologies, developing smart innovation in line with farmers’ lifestyles, and supporting research on oil content analysis and harvesting technology; (3) oil palm biomass conversion technologies, assessing environmental impacts through life cycle technology, evaluating the potential reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing the consumption rate of palm biomass; and (4) palm-based oleochemical products, developing oleochemical technology at the industrial level, expanding the potential capacity of producing oleochemical derivative products, and increasing the consumption rate and value added of CPO. All four frameworks were detailed and revised in line with the information obtained from seminars, comments, and interviews to meet the needs of all stakeholders. This framework will help drive the Bio-Circular-Green economy model in the future.
