Incorporation of Rice Husk Ash with Palm Oil Mill Wastes in Enhancing Physicochemical Properties of the Compost

Abstract: Rice husk ash (RHA), palm oil mill effluent (POME) sludge and decanter cake can be utilized together in compost production to minimize the environmental pollution. This study aims to evaluate the role of different composition of RHA in enhancing the physicochemical properties of palm oil-based compost. The composts were prepared by mixing different composition of RHA, in the range of 0% to 30%, with 1:1 (wt/wt) weight ratio of POME sludge and decanter cake. The moisture content, water holding capacity, pH, nit… Show more

“…The management may consider using a portable fan or portable fume extractor to direct the welding fumes away from workers during oxy-cutting and welding activities. This is to comply with Regulation 15 of the USECHH Regulations 2000, whereby employers shall control chemicals hazardous to health through the application of engineering control equipment …”

“…Compost preparation was prepared by adapting the same procedure used by Hisham and Ramli (2020) and Ramli et al (2019). The rice husk ash (RHA) was acquired from a nursery in Kuantan, Pahang, while palm oil mill effluent (POME) sludge was obtained from the aerobic pond at Lembaga Kemajuan Perusahaan Pertanian (LKPP) Lepar, Pekan, Pahang.…”

“…Treatment 1 (control) consisted of 50% POME sludge and 50% decanter cake with a total weight of 5 kg. For Treatment 2 (RHA 10 ), the compost was made up of 10% RHA, 45% POME sludge, and 45% decanter cake with the same total weight as Treatment 1, as referred to the previous study by Hisham and Ramli (2020) since current work is a continuation from the previous work done in Hisham and Ramli (2019). The details of the weight composition of raw materials used in this study are tabulated in Table 1.…”

“…Repurposing palm biomass, which has various applications, on palm oil plantations should be a part of this strategy. For example, palm oil empty fruit bunches and palm oil mill sludge can be used to produce organic fertilizers (Hisham and Ramli, 2021;Sudradjat and Diansyah, 2021). Palm oil mill sludge can also be used to enhance the growth and vigor of oil palm seedlings during the nursery stage (Ramachandrudu, 2020).…”
