Incorporating State-of-Charge Balancing into the Control of Energy Storage Systems for Smoothing Renewable Intermittency

Abstract: This paper proposes an effective control methodology for the Energy Storage System (ESS), compensating for renewable energy intermittency. By connecting generation variability and the preset service range of the State of Charge (SOC), this methodology successfully secures the desired SOC range while smoothing out power fluctuations. Adaptive to grid conditions, it can adjust response time (control bandwidth) of the ESS via energy feedback coefficients subject to the ESS capacity and its SOC range. This flexibi… Show more

“…The compensation power of battery can be obtained by subtracting the power compensation of SC from the power compensation of HESS as explained in (30). By adjusting the smoothing time constant of SC T 2 , we can control the fluctuating power of WTs assigned for SC and battery as explained in (27) and (31), respectively. The concept of the proposed power allocation control method is illustrated in Fig.…”

“…In order to reduce the power losses of the transmission system, ESS units are sited at the buses where wind turbines are in there [20]. By this way power curtailments of wind turbines are managed in this job [21]. In this work, the effect of ESS presence on security improvement of power systems hosting remarkable renewable energy resources is being assessed.…”
