Incorporating Landscape Dynamics in Small-Scale Hydropower Site Location Using a GIS and Spatial Analysis Tool: The Case of Bohol, Central Philippines

Abstract: Hydropower depends on the elevation head and water flow of a river. However, other factors must be considered, such as the risk associated with surface processes and environmental factors. The study aims to analyze a landscape’s dynamics and locate potential sites for small-scale hydropower systems (<10 MW) using a geographic information system, the curve number method, and the TopoToolbox with a digital elevation model and available spatial datasets. Across Bohol Island in the central Philippines, the stud… Show more

“…Aplication GeoDetector requires discrete variables, therefore, it is needed to classify all influencing variables. Influencing variables Classes were determined using the natural break method except for slope (Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF)), SPI [40], and knickpoint [41]. The comprehensive classification is displayed in Table 2.…”

“…In case of poor data quality, annually based consumption is commonly adopted. For instance, with reference to Bohol Island, Philippines, in [22], the annual load potentially served by each identified small-scale hydropower system was estimated based on the number of households and the data on national annual electricity consumption per capita. In [23], the measured annual electricity demand in the Canary Islands, Spain, was compared with the estimated energy potential from offshore wind fields.…”
