“…A fundamental determinant of sufficient oral hygiene is brushing duration [13,38,39]. A recent systematic review on the efficacy of manual toothbrushes demonstrated that plaque removal was clearly better after brushing for 2 min (41 % mean plaque reduction) than for 1 min (27 % mean plaque reduction) [40].…”

“…It appears, therefore, that brushing behaviour that emphasises vestibular surfaces, while neglecting the oral areas, is a phenomenon that extends across differences in times, education and culture. Although there is consensus that sufficient time is necessary to clean teeth thoroughly, it is much less clear which brushing technique is most appropriate [13,39]. Generally, types of strokes are categorised as vertical, horizontal (jiggling) or circular and constitute defined brushing techniques (e.g.…”

“…It was designed to mimic frequent acid exposure and normal oral hygiene habits. The immersion time in the slurries was 2 min twice daily, which is within the range of recommendations for proper oral hygiene [dos Santos et al, 2011]. Assuming an overall brushing time of 2 min, approximately 30 s is spent on each quadrant; thus, a brushing time of 15 s for our samples approximated clinically recommended conditions for brushing.…”

“…However, the increasing concern in the risk of fluorosis development may jeopardize this benefit, favoring the recommendation of fluoride-deficient toothpastes for young children [dos Santos et al, 2011;Giacaman et al, 2012], to which scientific evidence of anticaries effect is lacking [Walsh et al, 2010;dos Santos et al, 2012]. Moreover, fluorosis risk assessment and resulting recommendation protocols have been made based on the dose of fluoride ingested by young children, without considering the bioavailable fluoride dose.…”
