Inclusion complexes synthesized from an ABA triblock polymer and β-cyclodextrins: amplification of hydrophobic interaction along a hydrophilic polymer chain

Abstract: A triblock PEG-based polymer (CP1113) with a clear ABA structure was synthesized from 1,13-tridecanedioic acid (DA13) and mono-methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) (MePEG) via condensation reaction. An inclusion complex (IC1113) with b-cyclodextrin (CD) was prepared by co-precipitation and the IC formation was confirmed by transmittance determination with a UV-Vis spectrometer. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) were adopted to characterize IC1… Show more

“…In the case of functionalized fibers, it is clearly evident that the characteristic peaks of PCL at 2θ = 24° has broadened, and the intensity of the peak at 2θ = 22° has decreased significantly and shifted slightly to the right. Also, in general, the visibility of the β‐CD peaks diminished, and the absence of a crystalline peak at 2θ = 18°–19°, expected of ICs, indicates that PCL and β‐CD have not threaded …”

“…It is known that for the PPR inclusion complex CDs existed from the unbound state in aqueous solutions to the threaded state at the ends of polymer chains with a certain tendency to dethread. In other words, there was an equilibrium of CDs which would be affected by numbers of internal factors (polymer structure, size correlation, hydrophobicity, etc.) and external factors (preparation methods, solvents, concentration, etc.).…”

“…However, for the PR sample PEP26H29CD98M, those dynamically entrapped γ-CDs would disarrange the inter/intramolecular topological structure to a higher chaos state, shifting the featured single broad diffraction peak to smaller 2θ of 17.6°, as suggested by Bragg's Law. 34 TGA analyses are also performed on the samples γ-CD, PEP26H, PEP26H0CD98M and PEP26H29CD98M in the range of 150 °C to 550 °C as depicted in Fig. S6.…”
