“…(a) If the ligand is a macrocycle, this number indicates the ring size and is enclosed in brackets; e.g., [16]. Unusual substituents, on the macrocycle, that are not otherwise treated in this system (see below) might also appear; e.g., [Me216Me2] has been used to indicate the presence of gem-dimethyl groups as components of both saturated chelate rings in a [16] cyclidene. X-ring Structural formulas for the lacunar complexes discussed in this review.…”

“…Of these, the cyclidene system has been by far the most extensively studied, with more than 300 compounds prepared and the dioxygen affinities measured for about 100 of them. [13][14][15][16] The various cyclidenes are labeled Cyc, Cyd, Dcy, Vcy, and Cyf in Figure 1. They are neutral tetraazamacrocycles having characteristic unsaturation patterns and superstructures linked to two additional nitrogen atoms.…”

“…The family of tetraaza macrocycles first reported by Jäger 1 displays a fascinating interplay of structure-reactivity relationships and this has been exploited to interesting effect, in particular by Busch and Cairns, in the production of the socalled 'cyclidene' macrocyclic complexes 2 where examples have been used in reversible oxygen binding, 3 as models for cytochrome P-450, 4 and in supramolecular chemistry. 5 The solid state structure of the Jäger macrocycles varies widely with ring size. 6 The fourteen membered rings are planar, the fifteen membered rings adopt one of two possible geometries (either 'saddle shaped' or a Z conformation) while the sixteen membered ring, until now, has been found exclusively in the saddle shaped geometry (I).…”

“…The word template has been described by Busch as a chemical entity that "organizes an assembly of atoms, with respect to one or more geometric loci, in order to achieve a particular linking of the atoms" [9]. The most remarkable example, perhaps, is DNA replication, where a single strand of DNA templates the formation of a complementary strand through the assembly of nucleotide bases.…”
