Incidence trends of keratinocytic skin cancers and melanoma in Israel 2006-11

Abstract: The incidence of KC in Israel is high. The disparities in incidence trends between SCC, BCC and melanoma allude to their different aetiologies. These findings underscore the importance of continuous monitoring, education and prevention programmes in a growing high-risk population.

“…5,2124 For example, the state of Israel had the second highest incidence and mortality due to melanoma in the world; however, following prevention and detection efforts, its incidence rate dropped to 13th place for men and 20th place for women, whereas mortality dropped to eight and 10th place, respectively. 22,23,25 Furthermore, rates of melanoma in situ increased, indicating a higher awareness and increase in early detection. 22,25 Next, in an effort to improve waiting time after identification of a suspicious lesion, the United Kingdom implemented a “2-week” rule, according to which patients needed to see a specialist within 2 weeks of being referred by their general practitioner for any suspicion of cancer.…”

“…[8][9][10] World literature reports were similar; both nonmelanoma skin cancers were most commonly diagnosed after age 70 years. [41][42][43][44][45] REP studies highlighted an increased likelihood of diagnosis of cutaneous malignant melanoma in Olmsted County in persons older than 60 years, with the highest reported incidence for women occurring in the 40-to 59-year-old age group in one study. 13,14 In the world literature, the highest incidence of malignant melanoma and melanoma in situ was in those aged 65 years and older.…”

[44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51] Of note, premalignant melanoma in a study in western Australia was more commonly diagnosed in men older than 80 years, whereas women were most commonly aged 40-49 years. 57 In Olmsted County, lentigo maligna was more commonly diagnosed in those aged 70 years and older.…”
