Incidence of shoulder functional morbidity following ipsilateral mastectomy and latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction

Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of shoulder morbidity in our cohort of patients with latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction after mastectomy.MethodsThis is a retrospective study of prospectively collected data of 72 patients using validate Oxford shoulder score for function and quickDASH score for disability. Scores were collected preoperatively and at time of final review or study. We also reviewed patient records for patients who had a formal diagnosis of shoulder pathology. … Show more

“…The finding of LD harvest-associated morbidity is supported by systematic reviews of the literature on LD flaps [39,40]. However, the evidence on functional morbidity associated with LD flap harvest is still ambiguous [22,37,[40][41][42][43]. The follow-up time in most studies examining morbidities and consequences of harvesting the LD flap is relatively short.…”

“…The advances in surgical techniques and minimizing their invasiveness result in less severe tissue damage in the operated areas. The complications including chronic pain, upper limb and chest lymphedema, range of motion limitations, and motor control deficiencies may lead to upper limb function impairment and affect the quality of life negatively [5][6][7]. It is common that the patients experience fear of upper limb use in daily life even many years after the treatment [8].…”

“…It is common that the patients experience fear of upper limb use in daily life even many years after the treatment [8]. Clinical experience suggests that a number of upper limb function impairments may appear after a prolonged period of time [6,9]. To maintain the functional level of the upper limb, multiple elements of the movement system need to perform accordingly [10].…”
