Objective: To compare the effects of foot muscle strengthening exercises with and without elastic band to the dynamic balance function in children aged 8-12 years with flexible flatfeet. Methods: Forty-one children (aged 8-12 years) with flexible flatfeet and dynamic balance problem were randomly allocated into either the intervention or control group. Both groups received thrice weekly training for 6 weeks. The foot strengthening exercise regimens consisted of pronation, supination, short foot, and tiptoeing using elastic band for the intervention group and without elastic band for the control group. Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) was tested before and after 6 weeks of training. Results: A statistically significant difference of normalized SEBT scores was found for both groups in both legs (p=0.00, p<0.05). The intervention group was significantly better than the control group for both right and left legs (p=0.00, p<0.05).Conclusions: Foot muscle strengthening either with or without elastic band improves dynamic balance in children aged 8-12 years with flexible flatfeet. Exercise given with elastic band significantly shows better improvement in the dynamic balance compared to without elastic band.
Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is characterized by knee cartilage degradation. Knee Osteoarthritis symptoms are joint pain, stiffness, quadriceps muscle weakness and daily activities difficulties. The use of Kinesio Taping (KT) in Quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises (QSE) is known to increase quadriceps muscle strength, reduce pain and improve functional abilities in KOA. This study aimed to determine the effect of KT with QSE on quadriceps muscle strength and functional status in KOA. This is a double-blind randomized controlled trial, involving twenty-six KOA women that were divided equally into treatment and control groups. The treatment group was given KT and QSE, the control group received sham taping and QSE. Quadriceps muscle strength and WOMAC scores were measured before and after treatment at 4, 6 and 8 weeks. There was a significant difference in quadriceps muscle strength at the 6 th week (p = 0.019) between treatment and control groups and no significant differences (p> 0.05) in the strength of quadriceps muscle at 4t h and 8 th weeks and WOMAC values at 4 th , 6 th and 8 th weeks. We concluded that a combination of KT with QSE offers advantages for improvement of quadriceps muscle strength at 6 th week but not for functional status in KOA.
Background: Medical students need to cope with their tight schedule, which also demand a good physical fitness to do those activities. Insufficient leisure time and exhausting activities impede students' capacity on having routine physical exercise to maintain their physical fitness. Cardiopulmonary endurance describes a person physical fitness level, and lung function is one basic component of cardiopulmonary endurance. Without optimal lung function, circulatory system in the body cannot work properly. This study aimed to determine whether lung function giving a significant correlation with the cardiorespiratory endurance which are measured by Forced Expiratory Volume One Second (FEV1), Vital Capacity (VC), and VO2Maximum (VO2max), respectively. Methods: This study was conducted in September-October 2013 to the students of Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Padjadjaran academic year 2010-2012, using the cross-sectional method. Sample was taken through simple random sampling process. There were 34 male and 34 female students after controlling for covariates. Direct measurement using spirometer used to determine lung function and maximum oxygen uptake was measured by assessing Rhyming Step Test result. Correlation coefficient was then calculated by Pearson correlation test. Results: The correlation between FEV1with VO2max of male students giving a value of p=0.442, while for VC obtained a value of p=0.259. Female students result giving a value of p=0.746 for the FEV1with VO2max, and p=0.489 for the VC with the VO2max. Conclusions: There is no significant correlation between FEV1 and VC with the VO2max of the respondents.
Objective: To examine the prediction of Jamar grip strength value by using aneroid sphygmomanometer cuff method in adults. Methods: This study involved 120 subjects, aged 20-59 years old. The grip strength of subjects were measured using Jamar dynamometer and aneroid sphygmomanometer cuff method. Spearman analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between variables and grip strength. Forward stepwise was used to analyze the regression of Jamar dynamometer using aneroid sphygmomanometer cuff method.
