Incidence of drug-induced hepatic injuries: A French population-based study

Abstract: The incidence of hepatic adverse drug reactions (ADRs) remains unknown in the general population. The goal of this population-based study was to assess the incidence and seriousness of hepatic ADRs. All new cases of symptomatic drug-induced hepatic injuries were collected by 139 trained physicians (general practitioners [GPs] and specialists) between November 1997 and November 2000 in an area containing 81,301 inhabitants who could not go elsewhere for medical care. Over 3 years, 34 cases of hepatic ADRs were … Show more

“…Th e incidence in the general population varies between 1.27 per 100,000 per annum ( 5 ) in rural England to 2.4 per 100,000 person-years in Spain and Sweden ( 2,6 ). Among medical inpatients, the incidence is 1.4 % ( 7 ), whereas in an outpatient setting it is 0.014 % per patient per year ( 8 ). Although a majority will recover, mortality ranging LIVER from 7 to 11.7 % ( 9 -11 ) has been observed in an acute setting, and laboratory abnormalities are seen in only a minority of patients if followed up for >6 months ( 9 ).…”

“…7 Sgro et al, in the only prospective study to date, reported an incidence of 13.9 AE 2.4 per 100,000 individuals between 1997 and 2000. 8 They detected 34 cases in a population of 81,301. The figure was 16 times higher than the one spontaneously reported to regulatory authorities and testifies to the gross underreporting of cases of DILI.…”
