Incidence of diarrhea and associated risk factors in patients with traumatic brain injury and enteral nutrition

Abstract: To determine the occurrence of diarrhea and associated factors in critically ill patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in use of nutritional therapy. Prospective cohort study conducted in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a General Hospital reference in trauma. We evaluated TBI patients who stayed less than 72 h in the ICU, who were using EN for at least 48 h. “…The clinical manifestations are usually gastric retention, abdominal distension and high intra-abdominal pressure [13] . However, it is hard to provide an objective evaluation of gastrointestinal dysfunction in clinical practice because there is still a lack of quantitative standards to classify severity although there are numerous relevant research reports and many scholars have de ned gastrointestinal dysfunction and continuously improved and uni ed the de nition [14][15] . GIF scores provide a quanti cation evaluation for the varying degrees of gastrointestinal dysfunction and objectively and accurately re ect gastrointestinal functional status.…”

“…Children in ICUs with gastrointestinal bleeding, dysfunction or failure often endure prolonged hospital stays and have increased mortality [4]. However, objectively evaluating gastrointestinal dysfunction is difficult because quantitative standards to classify severity are lacking [5,6]. Few of the various existing scoring systems for determining the severity of disease in pediatric patients include an evaluation of gastrointestinal function [7].…”

“…Several studies have shown an association between diarrhea and mortality [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14], and this association remained even in ICU patients without CDI [8]. Taito et al conducted a systematic review and demonstrated that diarrhea was associated with the length of hospital stay and ICU mortality [14]; however, all previous studies de ned diarrhea based on dichotomized criteria with respect to consistency and frequency.…”
