Incidence of coliphage in potable water supplies

Abstract: Samples of drinking water from different sources in greater Cairo, Egypt, and bottled drinking water were tested for total coliform, fecal coliform, and coliphage populations. Of the 147 samples tested, 4 samples were positive for both total coliforms and coliphage, 65 samples were negative for total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and coliphage, and 78 samples were positive for coliphage and negative for total coliforms and fecal coliforms. The incidence of coliphage in these potable water supplies reflects the p… Show more

“…However, bacteriophages of the three groups studied were still detected in all the chlorinated samples. This will agree with published observations about detecting bacteriophages in disinfected waters that fulfilled the bacteriological criteria but still contained bacteriophages (El‐Abagy et al. 1988; Ratto et al.…”

“…The data in this table show that there are little differences among the sum ranks of the three techniques. These differences are not significant at the 1% level and are in agreement with the other studies in the IDRC coliphage program (Ratto et al, 1988;Castillo et al, 1988;El Abagy et al, 1988).…”

“…Fecal coliform densities ranged from 13-350 MPNI100 mL for the coliphage-positive samples, and the correlation between fecal coliforms and coliphage varied from 1 : 2 to 1:35. In no instance were coliphage recovered from coliform-free potable waters as has been noted recently in Singapore (Sim and Dutka, 1987) and Egypt (El-Abagy -~~ et al, 1987).…”
