Incidence of Anemia in Children With Solid Tumors or Hodgkin Disease

Abstract: Anemia is a hematologic abnormality commonly discussed during the treatment of childhood cancer, but its incidence has not been previously reported. As the basis for determining the incidence of anemia, this retrospective review of medical records combined databases containing the records of all patients 1 to 18 years of age with newly diagnosed neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, Hodgkin disease, Ewing sarcoma, or osteosarcoma from two pediatric oncology centers. Data from 405 patients were included in the analy… Show more

“…Anemia is a potential contributor to the functional impairment that often occurs during and after chemotherapy. Among children with malignant solid tumors, and particularly among children with NB, a significant proportion (51–74%) experience anemia at diagnosis35 and during treatment. Anemia is associated with a significant impairment in quality of life caused by fatigue.…”

“…The incidence of anemia in a large sample of children and adolescents with newly diagnosed Hodgkin's disease or a solid tumor was more than 50%, but data about the incidence of anemia in other diagnoses or over the course of treatment were not reported (Hockenberry et al, 2002). In another large sample of children and adolescents with a variety of new cancer diagnoses, fatigue was correlated with other symptoms, such as anorexia, weight loss, and early satiety at the time of diagnosis (Donaldson et al, 1981).…”

“…Anemia in patients with leukemia is most often due to underproduction of erythropoietic precursors, because of direct tumor infiltration of the bone marrow or chemotherapies [6]. In patients undergoing HSCT, radiotherapy and preparative myeloablative chemotherapy regimens further challenge RBC precursor production.…”
