Incidence of abortion after genetic amniocentesis in twin pregnancies

Abstract: Fetal outcome after genetic amniocentesis (AC) in viable twin pregnancies was analysed in a retrospective study at three centres in order to estimate the rate of fetal loss after AC. The maternal age ranged from 33 to 45 years (mean 36.7 years). The gestational age varied between 15 and 20 weeks of gestation (mean 17.1). In 98 viable twin pregnancies with complete follow-up, spontaneous abortion of both fetuses occurred within 28 completed weeks of gestation in eight pregnancies and six women aborted within 20… Show more

“…show the outcomes of multiple pregnancies after amniocentesis and CVS, quoted from studies published in the last 20 years. Earlier reports described the spontaneous abortion rate up to 28 weeks 11,12,18 . While most reported the miscarriage rate of both fetuses before 24 weeks, one reported loss before 20 weeks 13 .…”

“…Second-trimester twin amniocentesis is widely accepted as safe and accurate [4,5], Even early twin amniocentesis prior to 14 weeks of gestation is considered an applicable prenatal diagnostic procedure [6], When am niocentesis is performed in a twin pregnancy the operator has to be certain that both am niotic sacs are being sampled. Several tech niques have been advanced to minimize the possibility that one sac is sampled twice.…”

“…Fig. 1 shows the pregnancy loss rates before 20 and 28 weeks' gestation in various studies [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Pregnancy loss rates in these studies ranged from 0 to 6% up to 20 weeks and from 0 to 8% up to 28 weeks.…”
