Background: The objective of the study was to report the experience in the management of traumatic injuries of the limbs.Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study involving 342 patients managed in our department from January 2017 to December 2018. Study variables included epidemiology, clinical presentation and management. Open fractures were classified according to Cauchoix Duparc classification.Results: The study population included 241 males (70, 47%) and 101 females (29, 53%). The mean age was 44, 7 years (18 and 96 years). The lower limbs were involved in 292 patients (85, 4%); the upper limb in 50 patients (14, 6%). Surgical treatment was achieved in 305 patients and orthopedic in 37 patients. The average hospital stay was 35 days for patients managed surgically and 2 months for patients managed orthpedically. A 6 years follow up revealed 9 cases of osteitis on external fixators; 4 cases of aseptic non-union and 13 cases of moderate knee stiffness.Conclusions: Traumatic injuries of the limbs represent a major problem encountered in our daily practice. The predominance of pelvic limb fractures in most cases is due to road accidents. To prevent these issues actions should be taken such as upgrading the infrastructures and setting a health insurance system for all in order to ensure early and adequate care for all.

Background The practice of neurosurgery in a teaching hospital requires modern diagnostic tools and a rigorous organization of care. Objectives To present and discuss the management of neurosurgical emergencies in a teaching hospital in poor and low-income country. Patients and Methods This is a retrospective and descriptive study from April 2015 to March 2017 and includes traumatic and nontraumatic neurosurgical emergencies. Epidemiological, diagnostic, operative, and outcome data were evaluated. Results During the study period, 397 cases of neurosurgery were admitted. One hundred seventy-five of them were emergencies (43%), including 168 (96%) of traumatic origin. The average age was 32.5 years (1–80 years) with a male predominance: 149 men for 26 women, the sex ratio was 6.68. The cause of the neurotraumatological emergency was mostly road accidents with 143 cases (85.1%). The trauma was brain injury in 155 patients (92.3%) and spine injury in 13 patients (7.7%). In 64.3% of cases, diagnostic imaging was done beyond 48 hours. Surgery time was more than 48 hours when it was performed (21 cases). Outcome was good for 19 patients. Overall and postoperative mortality were, respectively, 34.5% (58 cases) and 9.5% (2 cases). Conclusion Neurosurgical emergencies care at the Departmental Teaching Hospital of Ouémé–Plateau has become a common activity with encouraging operating results despite difficult practice conditions

Perception of safety issues related to the operation of motorcycle taxi services in Cartagena, ColombiaWe aim to study the safety issues related to motorcycle informal taxi services in Cartagena. We also aim to understand the motorcycle-operators view of these issues in relation to the risk of getting injured. Data related to safety issues and traffic injuries was obtained from a unique dataset gathered by implementing a structured survey intended to follow the designs suggested by the International Labor Organization, the World Health Organization and the academic literature. We surveyed 403 motorcycle taxi operators in Cartagena, assuming an infinite population, a 95% confidence interval and a sample error of 4,9%. The results show that providing motorcycle taxi services leaves its operators permanently exposed to high levels of environmental, physical, and psychological safety issues. Another result was that a large percentage of them are aware that operating motorcycles represents a large risk, in addition to leaving them exposed to sustaining traffic accidents; nonetheless, they feel compelled to stay at the occupation, as there are insufficient job alternatives available to them.
