Incidence and Risk Factors for Developing Glaucoma Among Patients with Uveitis in a University-based Tertiary Referral Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Incidence of glaucoma differed depending on anatomic and etiologic diagnoses of uveitis. There is a significant association between severity of inflammation at presentation and development of glaucoma.

“…This is in line with previous report on the anatomic distribution of uveitis in Saudi Arabia. 9,24,25 Nevertheless, some studies reported no difference in incidence of uveitic glaucoma in relation to anatomic classi cation and etiology while others found anterior uveitis as the main cause of uveitic glaucoma. 2,8,[26][27][28][29] The presence of anterior segment in ammation contributes to the development of glaucoma in anterior uveitis and panuveitis by directly affecting the trabecular meshwork, while aqueous out ow pathway is less in uenced by posterior segment in ammation.…”

Alrubaie et al 9 reported that glaucoma surgery was most frequent in anterior uveitis and panuveitis in 1220 eyes with uveitis in Saudi Arabia. In the current study, the most common etiologic diagnosis was VKH and idiopathic uveitis, while most patients were females and males in the granulomatous and non-granulomatous uveitis groups, respectively.…”

“…5 The incidence of the major types of uveitis such as sarcoidosis, VKH disease, and infectious uveitis was lower in our study compared with previously published studies in Germany, 16 Italy, 5 Japan, 8,20 and Saudi Arabia. 21 The pattern of uveitis in various geographic regions is influenced by various combinations of geographic, environmental, and genetic factors. Sarcoidosis is more common in people of Northern European descent rather than Mediterranean descent, and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease occurs more commonly in patients with HLA associations seen in Asian and Middle Eastern populations.…”

“…When considering eyes that had angle-closure glaucoma, 69.1% had the chronic VKH disease associated with recurring episodes of anterior segment in ammation. The chronic recurrent form is signi cantly associated with secondary glaucoma [6,12,14,16,19,20]. Arevalo et al reported that 58.4% and 20.7% of the eyes that developed glaucoma had the chronic recurrent and acute form of VKH disease, respectively (p ≤ 0.0001) [12].…”
