Incidence and risk factors for symptomatic venous thromboembolism following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

Abstract: Purpose To determine the incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using a large national database and to identify corresponding independent risk factors. Methods The Humana administrative claims database was reviewed for patients undergoing ACL reconstruction from 2007 to 2017. Patient demographics, medical comorbidities, as well as concurrent procedures were recorded. Postoperative incidence of VTE was measured by identifying symptomatic d… Show more

“…While a bulk of evidence exists supporting the safety of a no-prophylaxis policy after simple knee arthroscopy procedures in low-risk patients [9,21,22], the need for thromboprophylaxis after ACLR is more accepted, even though there is little evidence on the comparative e cacy of different anticoagulants in this clinical situation [23].…”

“…The incidence of VTE following ACLR has been reported by many studies. The overall risk of VTE was generally deemed low but reports in the literature demonstrate a wide variability ranging from 0.3 to 17.9% [1, 2, 12, 17, 19, 21, 30, 33, 37, 45, 47]. Such a significant variation is likely due to the heterogeneity in the literature in terms of definition, detection, timing, demographics, concomitant surgery, and postoperative thromboprophylaxis [26].…”
