“…Chatrath et al reported that COVID-19 patients with HF developed AKI up to 45% vs. 24% in patients without HF [ 37 ]. Similarly, Tomasoni et al and Emad et al reported the incidence of AKI in COVID-19 patients as 28% and 30%, respectively [ 38 , 39 ]. We report the incidence of AKI as 5.56% in the AHF-COVID+ group vs. 2.9% in the AHF-COVID− group.…”

“…A high BAR value may be associated with a high urea value, which may be a consequence of acute kidney injury, a frequent complication in patients with COVID-19 [78]. In patients with acute kidney injury, it is possible to find fluid overload from the initial stages [79], which means that in severe cases that do not respond to fluid restriction and the use of diuretics, renal replacement therapy is indicated [80,81]. For this reason, the association between high urea values and higher mortality in patients with acute kidney injury [82,83] could explain our findings.…”

“…AKI is associated with a higher mortality rate, with ICU admission and the need for mechanical ventilation 63 , 64 . The incidence of AKI is variable, ranging between 4.2% to 71.2% 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 . Two recent systematic reviews reported a pooled incidence rate of 6% and 11% respectively, with subgroup analysis indicating that US population suffered from more cases than Chinese 71 , 72 .…”
