Objective: To correlate the amniotic fluid index (AFI), measurements of biparietal diameter (BPD) and head circumference (HC) with atrium of lateral ventricle measurements (ALV) and relate the association of fetal hydrocephalus with family history and consanguinity. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Private Ultrasound Clinic, Karachi. Period: December 2018 – July 2019. Material & Methods: Thirty six patients were inducted in the study. Female patients of age range of 18-41 years with gestational age of 21-39 weeks were inducted into the study after informed consent. Toshiba Aplio 300 ultrasound machine was used to measure, atrium of lateral ventricle, biparietal diameter, fetal length, head circumference and amniotic fluid index. Association between ALV and BPD, family history and consanguinity was seen by applying independent t-test while Pearson’s correlation was used to correlate the measurements of ALV and head circumference. Results: Atrium of lateral ventricle measurements >10mm were diagnosed as hydrocephalus. It was observed that hydrocephalus was associated with normal volumes of amniotic fluid with highly significant results (<0.000). Furthermore, the study also reported a strong association of family history and consanguineous marriages with hydrocephalus. A negative correlation was however observed between measurements of atrium of lateral ventricle and head circumference. Conclusion: Hydrocephalus was found to be associated with normal volumes of amniotic flid and had a strong association with family history and consanguinity.

Background: The implementation of surfactant for respiratory syndrome approbates the therapy as a revolutionary method inintensive neonatal therapy and respiratory resuscitation. It is important to investigate the costs of this treatment. Objective: The aim of the study is to analyze the data by the application of the surfactant Curosurf to preterm babies withrespiratory complications and describe the treatment costs, healthcare resource utilization and evaluate economic benefits ofsurfactant use in the treatment of neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and hyaline-membrane disease (HDM). Methods: A retrospective survey was performed covering 167 babies based on respiratory complications due to preterm birthand the necessity to apply a surfactant therapy. A documentary method was implemented and for each patient, an individualresearch protocol was filled out - a questionnaire created specifically for the purposes of the study. Results and discussion: An analysis of the data from the application of CUROSURF was made and the obtained therapeuticresults were compared to expenditures for the therapy, short-term therapeutic effect, benefits and consequences of the therapyof preterm newborns with respiratory complications. The application of CUROSURF to babies with RDS resulted in the realizationof net savings due to the elimination of the necessity of conducting several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as wellas their duration reduction of hospital stay, thus defining its health-economic benefits. Conclusions: The models of evaluation of cost effectiveness reveal that the medicinal product is expensive but effective fromthe aspect of short-term therapeutic results. Congenital malformations are a highly diverse group of conditions reported in both humans and animals, characterized by defects in morphogenesis observed at birth. Although most cases are idiopathic, genetic and environmental factors may be involved. The frequency of such conditions varies with species, geographic regions, and the specific malformation involved. In polymelia, supernumerary limbs are attached to different parts of the body. Gastrointestinal duplications are described less frequently and can be associated with polymelia. Cloacal atresia is among the least-reported malformations in avian species, described only once in a kiwi. Here we describe a case with these 3 malformations in a single broiler chick ( Gallus gallus domesticus) and provide a literature review about the occurrence of these malformations in birds. The 3-d-old chick also had an unidentified structure projecting from the pygostyle region. We performed clinical, radiographic, and postmortem examinations. The intestinal duplication was identified only during the postmortem evaluation. Detailed descriptions of avian congenital malformations are scarce. Although similar cases have been reported, we retrieved no cases of concurrent polymelia, intestinal duplication, and cloacal atresia in broiler chickens in our literature search, suggesting that the simultaneous occurrence of these conditions has not been reported previously in this species.
