Inactivation of Bacteria using Discharge Plasma under Liquid Fertilizer in a Hydroponic Culture System

Abstract: We developed a discharge plasma reactor under liquid fertilizer for inactivating bacteria in the recirculation system of hydroponics. The plasma reactor consisted of a wire electrode that was placed in an insulating circular cylinder and a grounded electrode on a cylinder outside. The reactor was sunk under liquid fertilizer when used. Atmospheric air was injected into the cylinder using a gas pump and released through arrayed tiny holes of the reactor. Repetitive nanosecond high-voltage pulses were applied to… Show more

“…campestris placed on a roller plasma conveyer was decreased, showing significant degradation of lipopolysaccharides and oxidation of genomic DNA (Toyokawa et al, 2017). The pathogenicity and colony forming unit of Ralstonia solanacearum were significantly reduced after the discharge plasma treatment of a hydroponic solution (Okumura et al, 2016). Plasma processed air (PPA) is a novel concept that can be used in the food packaging industry to reduce the load of microbes on packaging material and fresh produce.…”

“…A new solution-sterilization device using discharged plasma was developed to sterilize the nutrient solution ( Fig. 12; Okumura et al, 2016;Saito et al, 2016Saito et al, , 2017Takahata et al, 2015;Takano et al, 2015). The whole hydroponic system can be constructed at low cost as only one liquid fertilizerincorporating machine is needed.…”
