The current treatment regimens based on chemotherapy for Human African Trypanosomiasis and Animal Trypanosomosis are limited, and are not ideal as they are often associated with severe side effects. The emergence of drug resistant parasites presents an additional and major problem. The urgent need for the development of new, cheap, safe, and easy-to-administer compounds for the treatment of these infectious diseases prompted this study. Three doses (20mg/kg, 40mg/kg,80mg/kg) of ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Punica granatum were screened for trypanocidal activity against Trypanosoma brucei bruce in Balb Strain Albino mice. Parasitaemia and disappearance of clinical signs were used as parameters to monitor the efficacy of the extracts using the rapid matching method. Packed cell volume and weights of the mice were determined before and after treatment with extracts. Packed cell volume and Weight improved significantly (p<0.05) in the group which was admnistered 40 mg/kg ethanol extract when compared to the negative group. The LD 50 value calculated for intra-peritoneal route of administration was 90mg/kg. The findings are indicative of the trypanocidal potential of Punica granatum in the management of trypanosomosis.

Miombo woodlands cover about two thirds of Mozambique national territory. They provide a wide collection of goods and services to the formal and informal economies. A review on the traditional uses of 15 Miombo tree species in human and animal health, as well as the status of research towards the identification of bioactive compounds is presented. Among the 15 species selected, 12 have been screened for their biological activity and/or pharmacological properties and/or toxicity. The information gathered in this work is a key to further exploit potential new uses and future opportunities for research and valorization of the selected species.

Acacia nilotica is a plant has an inspiring range of medicinal uses. This plant contributes a number of groups among which are alkaloids, volatile essential oils, phenols and phenolic glycosides, resins, oleosins, steroids, tannins and terpenes, this study aims to: examine the antimicrobial action of ethanolic extraction from fruits and seeds of Acacia nilotica. Hot ethanol extract (48°C) of fruits and seeds obtained from Acacia nilotica, used in minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), agar diffusion method to detect the antibacterial effect of the extract. Elucidate almost for all bacterial types used in this study, the concentration of 100mg/ml was the mostly effective concentration on bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia, and Proteus mirabilis); while the E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa the concentration of 75 mg/ml was the effective concentration for both of them as an optimum concentration.
