In Vivo Study of Two Carbamide Peroxide Gels with Different Desensitizing Agents

Abstract: This study evaluated tooth whitening and sensitivity that occurred during and after 14 days of overnight bleaching with 15% carbamide peroxide gel with potassium nitrate and fluoride (Opalescence 15% PF, OP) and 16% carbamide peroxide with amorphous calcium phosphate (Nite White 16%, NW). Thirty-two subjects bleached their teeth using custom trays. The subjects had a baseline evaluation and returned after 7, 14, 21, 35 and 90 days for subjective and objective color evaluations. The subjects also recorded daily… Show more

“…31 Most previous studies have also used similar self-assessment scales for measuring intensity of pain induced by tooth whitening procedures. [32][33][34] However, given the differences in the way data were collected and the whitening system used, comparison to other studies was not possible.…”

“…19 Six of the studies were half-mouth design studies. 3,[14][15][16][17][18] This study design is the most valid study design for tooth-whitening research. Each tooth in the halfmouth responds to the agent that covers it.…”

“…15 The objective of another study was to determine whether the use of reservoirs during daytime bleaching made a difference in the effectiveness of a product, 16 while another study tested the null hypothesis that there was no difference between using the same equivalent concentrations of HP in agents containing HP and CP 17 and the last split mouth study that compared the use of at-home vs in-office toothwhitening agents. 3 Three studies in this meta analysis were not accomplished as split-mouth design studies, but on different cells of subjects.…”
