“…Our aim was to obtain a material with good mechanical and bioactive properties, while SCNA (in its both glassy and glass-ceramic forms) is mechanically strong but just weakly bioactive. Therefore, we decreased the content of silica (a dramatic decrease of the bioactivity kinetics was observed when glass composition exceeds 53 mol.% of silica [23]) and alumina (the presence of which is known to stabilize the glass network, thereby decreasing surface reactivity [24]), and increased the content of Na 2 O (Na + ions are known to play a key role in the early stages of the bioactivity mechanism in silicate glasses [1]). MgO was introduced because of the beneficial effect of magnesium in stimulating osteoblast activity [25].…”
