The sperm were diluted while the eggs were still in the irradiator, so that the eggs could be fertilized within 30 to 60 sec after irradiation in order to minimize prefertilization recovery of the eggs (see Henshaw 1932, Failla 1962 In pilot experiments, two independent observers visually estimated the mean post-fertilization division times of control zygotes and of those zygotes in which either sperm, unfertilized eggs, or both had been y-irradiated . This method of determining the mean division time is generally accurate to within ± 1 min (see Failla and Rustad 1970) .…”
