In vitro synthesis of bioactive hydroxyapatite using sodium hyaluronate as a template

Abstract: Being a biocompatible and bioactive material, hyaluronic acid has great potential as a template to regulate the mineralization of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocrystals in vitro. Our present study investigates the effects of sodium hyaluronate (SH) concentrations and initial pH values on the chemical composition, morphology and biological properties of hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals prepared by the wet chemical approach. All purified products were studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffra… Show more

“…1a. The Bragg diffraction peaks of the product, matched quite well with those of traditional nano-HA (PDF # 09-4032) at 2q values of 25.9 , 31.7 , 32.9 , 39.6 , 49.4 , and 53.1 , which were indexed to (002), (211), (300), (222), (213), and (004) planes respectively, 35 proving the formation of nano-HA phase. “…The bands at 562 cm À1 and 628 cm À1 are derived from the n 4 bending vibrations of the P-O mode, and the 960 cm À1 band has resulted from the presence of PO 4 3À ions (n 1 symmetric P-O stretching vibrations). 14,15 The peak at 960 cm À1 is also an indication of the crystalline nano-HA. 16 The strong band at 1028 cm À1 is also assigned to the P-O stretching vibrations of PO 4 3À .…”

“…The diffraction peaks of all HA samples agree with those of pure HA at 2θ values of 25.9°, 31.7°, 32.9°, 39.8°, 46.7°, 49.5° and 53.1°, which are indexed to (002), (211), (300), (310), (222), (213) and (004) planes, respectively [6,7,10]. The intense bands at around 2θ = 26° and 2θ = 33° prove that the samples are predominantly HA.…”

“…The substitution of carbonate of HA can enhance its solubility, which makes HA biologically active [6,10]. In addition, calcium-deficient apatites are also of biological importance since the catalytic activity of HA is proportional to the calcium deficiency of the sample.…”
