In vitro susceptibility of Gardnerella vaginalis and Bacteroides organisms, associated with nonspecific vaginitis, to sulfonamide preparations

Abstract

Recent reports suggest that anaerobic Bacteroides organisms are frequently found with Gardnerella vaginalis in nonspecific vaginitis. Specimens taken from % women with vaginal discharge were tested simultaneously for these organisms.

Some promising in vitro studies with cephradine 35 and local sulfonamide preparations 36 have been done with in vivo studies, hopefully, to follow shortly. Additionally, nonpharma‐ceutical therapy such as acidification of the vagina with Acigel or vinegar douche and reestablishment of lacto‐bacillus with yogurt could be considered based upon some evidence that the pH of the vagina may make the difference between colonization and infection.…”
