In Vitro Evidence for the Protective role of Sida rhomboidea. Roxb Extract Against LDL Oxidation and Oxidized LDL-Induced Apoptosis in Human Monocyte–Derived Macrophages

Abstract: The present study was undertaken to evaluate protective role of S. rhomboidea. Roxb (SR) leaf extract against in vitro low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL) induced macrophage apoptosis. Copper and cell-mediated LDL oxidation, Ox-LDL-induced peroxyl radical generation, mitochondrial activity, and apoptosis in human monocyte-derived macrophages (HMDMs) were assessed in presence of SR extract. Results clearly indicated that SR was capable of reducing LDL oxidation and formation of int… Show more

“…As is well known, these substances interfere in several biological systems of mammals, mainly due their known antioxidant potential with hydrogen-donating radical scavenger properties (Urquiaga & Leighton, 2000). In S. rhombifolia, the total phenolics and flavonoids are reported in extracts obtained by maceration and decoction using water and hydroethanolic solutions; roots, stem and leaves have also been studied (Dhalwal, Deshpande, & Purohit, 2007;Thounaojam et al, 2011).…”

“…Alkaloid derivatives, quinazolines (vasicine and vasicinine) and ephedrine have been reported in S. cordifolia, and the cardiovascular effects observed upon consumption are attributed to these substances (Ghosal et al, 1981). The literature predominantly reports the presence of phenolic compounds and their quantitative estimation by colorimetric assay (Thounaojam, Jadeja, Devkar, & Ramachandran, 2011 In plants, several works have summarized the search for active compounds with antimicrobial potential. This understanding facilitates the discovery of promising chemical classes for use as medicinal agents or additives in medicine and food.…”
