In-vitro Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity and Anti-collagenase Activity of Thalassia hempricii as a Potent Ingredients for Anti-Wrinkle Cosmetics

Abstract: Background:Thalassia hemprichii have reported containing antioxidant effects. However, information on other biological activities relating to the anti-wrinkle properties is limited. The free radical scavenging activity and enzyme inhibitory activity of the plant extracts investigated that they can help restore skin elasticity and thereby slow the wrinkling process. Objective: To evaluate in-vitro antioxidant and anti-collagenase activity of T. hemprichii as a potent ingredient for anti-wrinkle cosmetic. Method… Show more

“…Collagenase enzyme is a metalloproteinase which degrade molecules such as elastin, fibronectin, gelatin, and collagen. [51] Collagen is one of the building units of the skin and is the major constituents of the connective tissues. It also plays a crucial role in maintaining the elasticity and strength of the dermal tissue.…”

“…The total phenolic content present in the extracts were in the range of 0.52-0.55 GAE/100 g. Further, the antioxidant activity of the extract was assessed against C. histolyticum collagenase spectroscopically using Wittanauer method. The extract showed 50% inhibitory activity at 20 µl showing that T. hemprichii could be used as anti-wrinkle agent in cosmetics [22] . Researchers conducted study for optimization of process of extraction for the seagrass T. hemprichii in order to maximize its antioxidant effect and total phenolic content.…”

“…2018;10(5):958-62. extract of T. hemprichii has also been reported its potency as an anti-wrinkle cosmetics. 11 Extraction of phytochemicals from plant materials is impacted by many factors such as solvent, solvent concentration, extraction time, temperature and pH. 8,12 Significant effect on the antioxidant activity and phenolic content from different pH and temperature of extraction conditions have been studied by Inggrid et al 13 and Wong et al 14 Moreover, studies on the evaluation of antioxidant activity from T. hemprichii generally have been reported from the methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane extract, while the ethanol extract is still limited.…”
