In vitro cytotoxic, genotoxic and antioxidant/oxidant effects of guaiazulene on human lymphocytes

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate for the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and antioxidant/oxidant activity of GYZ on human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs). Guaiazulene (GYZ) was added into culture tubes at various concentrations (0-400 µg/mL -1 ). Cytotoxicity against the human lymphocytes cultures was examined by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay. The proliferative response was estimated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Antioxidant/oxidant activity was e… Show more

“…[19] In the previous report on LDH analysis, the highest doses (150, 200, and 400 µg/mL) of GYZ resulted increases in the LDH levels compared with the controls. [20] In this study, we observed that the LDH level was significantly increased with the increase concentration of EEEA when compared with control. Thus, it is clear that EEEA has good cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cell line.…”

“…This compound has antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties [4] [10] [11]. Guaiazulene can safely be used as a natural antioxidant in cosmetic ointments [12]. Azulenes are widely used not only in medicine but also for cosmetic purposes [13], improving the condition of sensitive skin areas and preventing small wounds and infections.…”

“…Guaiazulene(Gua) is a chemical with antispasmodic and antimicrobial activity. With this aspect, it is used in herbal therapy [3]. Gua, which is a cosmetic colorant approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the USA, is used in skin -body care products, toothpaste, hair dyes, eye solutions, in the treatment of nipple irritation in nursing mothers and also to relieve itching caused by dry skin.…”
