“In vitro” apatite formation on the surface of bioactive glass

Abstract: Abstarct-A bioactive glass with composition (wt %) 46SiO2 ⋅ 24CaO ⋅ 24Na 2 O ⋅ 6P 2 O 5 was elaborated by melting method. "In vitro" experiments were carried out by soaking of glass samples in a simulated body fluid (SBF) at different times. The obtained results showed the formation of a bioactive hydroxyapatite (HA) layer on the surface of bioactive glass after "in vitro" assays.

“…For this purpose, samples of the material can be immersed in a simulated body fluid (SBF), which is a saturated solution in equilibrium with apatite at 37 C and with pH and chemical composition similar to the human blood plasma (Kokubo et al 1990;Kokubo and Takadama 2006;Bohner and Lemaitre 2009;Bui et al 2013;Bellucci et al 2014). Several different SBF solutions were proposed in the past, each depending on the human plasma characteristics taken in consideration (e.g., the Fig.…”

“…On the third day, a plate-shaped precipitate with a thickness of 0.2 μm and a length and width of about 2 μm had formed on the surface of sHAp and sHAp + TiO 2 . The newly generated substance was assumed to be HAp based on its shape [3,[13][14][15]. The production of new HAp on the surface of sHAp + TiO 2 when immersed in the simulated body fluid suggests that sHAp exhibits osteoconductivity even when complexed to TiO 2.…”

“…Mineral coating, for example Ca/P by microarc oxidation 14 , was also developed on 3Dprinted Ti6Al4V porous implants with lower cost and stable quality, while its promotion of bone ingrowth was far from satisfactory, significantly hampering their clinical applications. 15 In recent years, bioactive glasses (BG) have received increasing attention [16][17][18] , because they show the best performance on osteogenesis and angiogenesis in the absence of biogenic growth factors 19 , the two essential elements for ideal bone regeneration materials 20,21 . Since Larry Hench created a kind of BG named 45S5, it has been developed and applied in clinical practice 22 .…”
