In Vitro and In Silico Characterization of Curcumin-Loaded Chitosan–PVA Hydrogels: Antimicrobial and Potential Wound Healing Activity

Abstract: Curcumin has been used in traditional medicine forages. The present study aimed to develop a curcumin-based hydrogel system and assess its antimicrobial potential and wound healing (WH) activity on an invitro and in silico basis. A topical hydrogel was prepared using chitosan, PVA, and Curcumin in varied ratios, and hydrogels were evaluated for physicochemical properties. The hydrogel showed antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. In silico studies showed good bindin… Show more

“…Using curcumin in hydrogel dressings instead of various nanoparticles (e.g., Cu, Ag) reduces the potential toxicity while maintaining the antimicrobial effect towards Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Other advantages of these materials include antioxidant properties, hemostatic effect, and enhanced collagen formation, which results in faster and better wound healing, including infected ones, which was confirmed in the in vitro and in vivo studies [46,47,[54][55][56][57].…”

“…It is worth emphasizing that chitosan has been loaded with other active substances, for example, honey [ 53 ], curcumin [ 54 , 55 ], plant essential oil [ 56 ], and many other compounds [ 8 , 57 ]. Chitosan-based membranes and nanoparticles can be used in drug delivery, per-oral delivery, pulmonary drug delivery, nasal drug delivery, mucosal drug delivery, gene delivery, buccal drug delivery, vaccine delivery, vaginal drug delivery, and cancer therapy [ 58 ].…”

“…Synthetic PVA hydrogels have also been tested by loading them with Calendula officinalis extract, which improves the adhesiveness and was effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria [ 103 ]. Curcumin, obtained from the roots of Curcuma longa, is a hydrophobic polyphenolic compound with remarkable bioactive properties, and promising results have been obtained by loading it into chitosan or PVA hydrogels [ 104 , 105 , 106 , 107 ]. Some essential oils are derived from plants such as lavender, thyme, peppermint, tea tree, rosemary, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and lemongrass [ 108 ].…”
