“…The lower serum IgG levels in SBL birds might be a reflection of a reduced metabolism in the bursal cells of this line. We have shown that bursal cells from 7-to 10-week-old SBL chickens consumed less oxygen than did bursal cells from the LBL (Kulkami et al, 1971). If peripheral B-cells are similar in their metabolism to in situ bursal cells, then one might predict a reduced total Ig synthesis in SBL birds.…”

“…has been found not to differ in weight ( 5 ) or cell number (17) between LBL and SBL chicks. A lack of thymus weight differences (mg/g total body weight) have been substantiated by this study.…”

“…This would suggest the SBL bursa had by 1-3 weeks of age sufficiently seeded the peripheral lymphoid tissue so that removal of the bursa no longer interfered with immunocompetence. The earlier maturation, greater number of cells (17), and subsequent earlier release of cells or a humoral substance from the bursa of LBL chicks would account for this lines' earlier immunocompetence. Plaque counts support these conclusions in that the LBL BSX at hatch group did not differ from the LBL control group while the SBL BSX at hatch group was significantly lower in plaque forming cells than the SBL control group ( p 4 0.06).…”

“…The method of preparation o f thymus and bursal lymphocyte suspensions was similar to the one used previously in our laboratory [21]. The bursa and thymus from each bird were washed individually in HBSS and cut into small fragments.…”
