In vitro activities of trovafloxacin against 557 strains of anaerobic bacteria

Abstract: The antimicrobial activity of trovafloxacin for 557 strains of anaerobic bacteria was determined by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards-approved Wadsworth agar dilution technique. The species tested included Bacteroides fragilis (n = 91), other members of the B. fragilis group (n = 130), Campylobacter gracilis (n = 15), other Bacteroides spp. (n = 16), Prevotella spp. (n = 49), Porphyromonas spp. (n = 15), Fusobacterium spp. (n = 62), Bilophila wadsworthia (n = 24), Sutterella wadsworthens… Show more

“…All β‐lactamase‐producing Prevotella species isolated in the present study had amoxicillin and ampicillin MICs >0.5 mg/ml which, according to NCCLS breakpoints (19), confirms the presence of a β‐lactamase. In accordance with previous findings (1, 13, 14, 34), 100% susceptibility to amoxicillin/clavulanate and metronidazole was observed in the Prevotella isolates, but variable resistance to tetracycline was found. The tetracyclines achieve levels in the gingival fluid that are two to five times higher than blood levels (4, 11) and have been used frequently in the past to treat periodontal disease (24, 26).…”

“…In comparison with other studies (1,5,6,12,(16)(17)(18)(22)(23)(24), we found similar MIC 50 and MIC 90 of trovafloxacin, ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, clindamycin, imipenem, erythromycin, and amoxicillin-clavulanate. Like Pankuch et al (16), we found Gatifloxacin 1 3 2 3 5 3 1 8 Ciprofloxacin 1 1 5 1 1 5 1 2 4 16 Trovafloxacin 2 2 8 5 1 2 Continued on following page a moderate level of clindamycin resistance for all strains tested (MICs for 10% of the strains were Ͼ4 mg/liter).…”

“…Spangler et al [35] used supplemented Wilkins-Chalgren agar and found trovafloxacin to be active in vitro against 487 (99.6%) of 489 anaerobes at р2 mg/mL except for 1 strain each of Prevotella bivia and Eubacterium lentum. Wexler et al [36] found trovafloxacin to be active against 553 strains of anaerobic bacteria at р2 mg/mL and that 2 strains of B. distasonis and 2 strains of B. thetaiotaomicron required 4 mg/mL for inhibition. In a multicenter survey, Aldridge et al [19] noted a 93% susceptibility (MIC 90 , 2 mg/mL) of 346 intra-abdominal isolates to trovafloxacin.…”

“…Trovafloxacin is an extended-spectrum fluoroquinolone with enhanced in vitro activity against anaerobic bacteria [34][35][36]. Although its use in the United States has been curtailed because of potential hepatotoxicity, it has been studied and used to treat intra-abdominal infections and other surgical indications such as prophylaxis.…”
