Background/IntroductionCertain plant compounds may be toxic via direct human skin contact, while others may become phototoxic when combined with light. Dr. Robert Klaber originally coined the term "phytophotodermatitis" in a 1942 publication of the British Journal of Dermatology and Syphilis. Dr. Klaber suggested this term to describe the phenomenon of human skin eruptions produced by photosensitizing plants and their extracts upon exposure to sunlight [1]. Phytophotodermatitis may have only recently been coined as a term, but historical characterizations have been described as far back as 2000 B.C. in Egypt [2].
