In situ identification of Action 4, SECA and QD-PEP bullets from special police ammunitions by computed tomography

Abstract: Introduction Special deformation bullets were developed for police forces to achieve a defined penetration depth (avoiding over-penetration) and a controlled energy transfer (avoiding collateral damage). This article focuses on Action 4, SECA and QD-PEP bullets. These 9 mm bullets were specially designed for controlled deformation. The characteristic slight mushrooming with a front cross-section of approximately 11.5 mm after entering a ballistic simulant was verified in ballistic tests. To achieve such slight… Show more

“…Bullets from special police ammunition, such as Action 4 bullets (Figure 1), are designed to present only very slight mushrooming because of their specific designs or rather their hollowed cores, which can be delineated on CT as well. 13 The shape of these internal cavities varies among different types of police ammunition and can serve as individual characteristics for the identification of these bullets. 13 If a bullet is fragmented, the individual fragments can still provide information on the ammunition used.…”

On CT, a fragment may turn out to be a separated jacket, in which case the lodged bullet is certainly not an unjacketed solid bullet.…”
