Zhang et al (1995) measured pore-water concentrations of dissolved Cu of l-2 nmol liter -1 in July 1993, but these lower levels would have little impact on the degree of Cu(II)-sulfide supersaturation. The results indicate either that the attributed speciation is incorrect due to inadequacies in the model, including the questionable occurrence of dissolved Cu(II), or that precipitation of the pure sulfides is kinetically constrained.…”

“…This hypothesis of greater concentrations of free Ni 2+ , compared to free Pb , was supported by experimental characterization of pore water metal speciation in selected VT sediments (SC2, WF3, BF4) during the 2004 sediment toxicity tests . This study used metals sequestered into 'diffusion gradient thin-film' (DGT) samplers (Zhang et al, 1995) to indicate the relative availability of free metal ions in pore waters. DGT samplers accumulated more Ni than Pb from all three sediments, despite consistently greater concentrations of Pb measured in filtered pore waters.…”
